Why should children in Zurich learn Schwiizerdütsch?
Children who grow up in Zurich or have recently moved there quickly realize: classes are taught in Standard German, but the playground belongs to Zurich German. Children who don’t understand or speak the dialect often find it difficult to make friends.
But Swiss German can be learned. And the earlier children start, the more natural the language becomes for them. It helps them connect, feel more confident in social situations, and truly feel at home in their surroundings. That’s real integration.
And for children who already hear some Swiss German at school but speak another language at home, the course provides the structured foundation that the playground and family can’t offer.
During the summer holidays, we also offer a wide range of holiday courses for children aged 4 to 15.

Student review
We are from Ukraine and our daughter was overwhelmed by German and Swiss German. She spoke a mix, so we wanted her to attend a Swiss German course. By now she speaks really good Zurich German and no one thinks she’s from Ukraine anymore. We’re very proud of that.

Frequently Asked Questions
From what age can my child learn Swiss German?
From 4 years old. We distinguish between 3 age groups: 4-6, 6-9, and 9-12 years, to ensure age-appropriate instruction.
My child already speaks Standard German well. Do they still need a course?
Yes. This course is especially valuable for exactly these children. Standard German helps in the classroom, but on the playground, at sports clubs and at friends’ homes, everything happens in Swiss German. Children who don’t speak the dialect are often at a social disadvantage, even if their language skills are otherwise strong. Our course closes exactly that gap.
Does my child already need to speak Swiss German?
Not at all. Our courses are suitable for complete beginners as well as for children who already hear or speak some Swiss German and want to deepen the language in a structured way.
Are the courses also available online?
Yes, all courses can also be booked online. For younger children, however, we recommend in-person classes whenever possible, because children learn language best through direct contact—body language, real reactions and the energy of a group. Contact us for personal advice.
Which Swiss German dialect is taught?
Our native-speaking teachers teach the Zurich dialect.
What if my child is shy and doesn’t dare to speak?
We know that well. That’s why we teach in small groups of up to 6 children. In a small, familiar setting with a patient teacher, even reserved children feel confident enough to join in after a short time. Just mention it when you register.
