Russian Courses for Children in Zurich

Learning Russian for children aged 4 to 12

In Zurich, Russian is primarily a family language. Many children speak Russian at the dinner table with мама and папа, call бабушка and дедушка on the phone, but often cannot read or write.

At Wordculture in the center of Zurich, children aged 4 to 12 learn Russian in small groups of up to 6 participants with individual attention. This allows kids to systematically develop Russian as a heritage language or discover it as a new language from scratch.

Why should children in Zurich learn Russian?

Maintaining the heritage language
Many Russian-speaking children in Zurich speak Russian at home but can neither read nor write it. Their vocabulary shrinks, German mixes in, and conversations with grandparents become more difficult. Our course gives them the foundation: Cyrillic script, grammar, and the feeling that their language matters.

A language with a future
Russian opens up cultural and professional opportunities for children that extend far beyond their school years.

Cognitive Benefits
Decoding a new writing system, navigating six cases, recognising word-formation patterns: all of this trains analytical thinking even if the children don’t notice, because they’re too busy playing and laughing.

During the summer holidays, we also offer a wide range of summer camps for children aged 4 to 15.

Age group: 4-6 years

Russian sounds different from anything children hear in their everyday life in Zurich. But that's exactly what makes it so exciting. The little ones learn through picture cards, movement, finger games, and songs. The native-speaking teacher speaks consistently in Russian and creates a warm atmosphere where children absorb the language naturally. Russian children learn that their language is also spoken outside the home.

1st-3rd Grade
Learning to read and write

Age group: 6-9 Years

From school age, Cyrillic script is added. Letter by letter, children playfully learn to write their names, read first words, and form short sentences. Russian fairy tales like Masha and the Bear provide conversation topics and cultural insights.

Grades 4-6
Gain confidence

Age group: 9-12 Years

Older children deepen their Cyrillic reading and writing skills, work with simple texts, and engage in conversations about topics that interest them. Grammar and vocabulary are systematically built up, yet everything remains embedded in a lively context. Children who speak Russian at home learn the formal written expression they lack, and for those learning Russian as a foreign language, this is the step towards independence.

Student review

My son was born in Zurich. We speak Russian at home, but he couldn’t read. After a year at Wordculture, my 8-year-old son now reads Russian children’s books and my mother in Moscow cries tears of joy on the phone that her grandson speaks Russian so well.
