French courses for children in Zurich

French for Children Aged 4 to 12

In Switzerland, French is a national language, and children who speak French well later on have major advantages in life. At Wordculture in the heart of Zurich, children aged 4 to 12 learn French in small groups with a maximum of 6 participants. Our native-speaking teachers make lessons playful and age-appropriate with songs, stories and role plays.

Why should children learn French in Zurich?

French becomes a compulsory subject in Zurich from Year 5, and for many children it is one of the biggest academic challenges at school. Those who have had playful exposure to the language beforehand start with an enormous advantage.

Beyond that, French opens both personal and professional doors for children growing up in Switzerland: the Romandie is right on the doorstep, and in many companies French skills are a real asset. For francophone families, our courses offer the opportunity to develop the family language in a structured way.

During the summer holidays, we also offer a wide range of summer camps for children aged 4 to 15.

Bonjours, les chouchous!

At this age, it’s all about internalising the sound, rhythm and melody of the language. Children sing French nursery rhymes, listen to short stories, play language games and pick up their first words right away. Lessons are conducted entirely in French so the kids develop a natural ear for the language. Drawing, crafts and movement are an integral part of every lesson.

1st-3rd Grade
Learning to read and write

After school enrollment, lessons become more structured. Children begin reading and writing, learning to form their first words and sentences. Small projects provide motivation: cooking a French recipe, writing a postcard, or performing a mini-play in French. The course complements and prepares for French as a school subject, which starts in 5th grade in Zurich.

4th-6th Grade
Head start for school

Children aged 9 and up particularly benefit from the Wordculture course, as they enter French lessons at school with a solid foundation or can build upon existing school knowledge. We work with age-appropriate texts and dialogues, and also place special emphasis on free speaking and listening comprehension. For children who want to prepare for the DELF Junior, we offer targeted individual lessons.

Student review

Our daughter is learning French at Wordculture, even though she initially had major difficulties with the language. Now she even looks forward to French at school, which I never would have thought.
