Why learn Swiss German with Wordculture?
Although Zurich is a very international city, real everyday life still happens in Swiss German. If you only speak Standard German, you can communicate with locals, but for many Swiss people, High German feels almost like a foreign language. Anyone who wants to truly belong in the neighborhood, on the playground, or during coffee breaks in the long run should learn Zurich German.
Schwiizertüütsch has no standard written language and a simplified grammar. That’s why no textbook in the world can replace what native-speaking teachers convey in a structured course: real pronunciation, lively expressions, and a feel for the Zurich dialect in all its nuances.
And most importantly: if you speak Schwiizertüütsch—or at least understand it—you’ll be perceived differently in Zurich. Not as a guest, but as someone who really lives here and wants to belong.
We also offer Swiss German courses for children.

Student review
I’m from Germany, but after three years I finally wanted to learn Züritüütsch because I work for a Swiss start-up. Wordculture helped me with that. I’ve been in Zurich for 6 years now, and I actually speak Swiss German and have found real Swiss friends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I learn Swiss German even if I don’t speak Standard German?
Yes. Our Swiss German A1 course does not require Standard German. Many participants start directly with Swiss German because they don’t come into contact with Standard German in everyday life. Our teachers adapt the lessons to your starting point.
What’s the difference between Zurich German and Swiss German?
Swiss German is the umbrella term for all dialects in German-speaking Switzerland. Zurich German is the dialect of the city and region of Zurich. That’s why we teach Zurich German at Wordculture. With a solid foundation in Zurich German, you’ll increasingly understand the other Swiss German dialects as well.
I speak Standard German well—do I still need a Swiss German course?
Yes, absolutely. If you learned German as a foreign language, you can also learn Swiss German, because the grammar is simpler than in Standard German and, above all, the pronunciation changes. Many Germans and Austrians are surprised by how little they understand in informal conversations—and how much changes in everyday life when they suddenly speak a few sentences in dialect themselves.
Are there also hybrid Swiss German courses?
Yes. If you wish, we offer hybrid courses that combine in-person and online sessions. Together, we’ll find the format that fits your daily life.
Can I meet the naturalisation requirements with this course?
This course teaches Swiss German and does not explicitly prepare you for the fide test or the naturalisation interview in Zurich. For individual advice on your specific situation, we recommend a non-binding consultation with us, as we offer dedicated fide test preparation courses as well as naturalisation preparation courses.
